Family Sponsorship

  • What: Information about Family Sponsorship
  • Who: Helen Jenny Quan-Metro Toronto Chinese and Southeast Asian Legal Clinic
  • When: Tuesday May 25, 2010 from 2:00pm-4:00pm
  • Where: VAT Downtown Office at 1364 Dundas St., West

  • Why: This workshop is designed for clients to understand information about family sponsorship such as what conditions must be met by persons sponsoring, what are the financial requirements, and under what circumstances application processing may be suspended.

Ontario works and ODSP (Ontario Disability Support Program)

  • What: Ontario Works and ODSP
  • Facilitator: Phuong Nguyen, Settlement Counsellor at VAT
  • When: Friday May 21, 2010 from 10:00am-12:00pm
  • Where: VAT North York Office at 3585 Keele St., Unit 13

  • Why: This workshop is designed for clients to know about Ontario Works and ODSP such as what is Ontario Works, who can apply for Ontario works, what is O.D. S. P, who can apply for ODSP, and the difference between the two types of benefits.

Citizenship Study Class

  • What: Studying for Citizenship Test
  • Facilitator: Phuong Do, Settlement Counsellor at VAT
  • When: Saturday from 3:00pm-5:00pm
  • Duration: 7 weeks, from April 24, 2010 to June 5, 2010
  • Where: VAT North York Office at 3585 Keele St., Unit 13

  • Why: This workshop is designed for permanent residents who will be taking the Citizenship test in the near future. This study class will help clients to understand the procedures of the test and be familiar with the multiple choice practice questions.

Point System and Second Career Eligibility

  • What: Informing clients about the Point System and the Second Career Eligibility when clients lose their job and have exhausted their employment insurance benefits.

    Second Career provides laid-off workers with:
    • Skills training to help them find jobs in high-demand occupations in Ontario
    • Financial support

    Second Career provides up to $28,000 for:

    • Tuition
    • Books
    • Instructional material costs such as manuals or workbooks
    • Transportation
    • A basic living allowance

    Several factors are considered when determining who will receive funding. Clients are welcome to attend this orientation session to find out if Second Career is a potential option and what next steps to take.
